We thought it was time to talk about the four main metals used for custom metal fabrication: aluminum, copper, stainless steel, and carbon steel. No. 1 – Carbon Steel Fabrication
Carbon steel is the most common form of steel in industrial applications. It is relatively easy to work with and can be finished in a variety of ways to withstand the stresses found in industrial environments.
The majority of carbon steel used in industrial applications can be classified as “mild,” “low-carbon,” and “plain-carbon.” This steel has a carbon content below 0.3 percent, typically between 0.16 and 0.29 percent. It is a pliable steel that can be bent, rolled, and welded. The higher the carbon content, the more brittle it becomes and the harder it is to weld.
Carbon steel is used in industrial applications such as structural steel, ducts, tanks, and access equipment. Carbon steel is a great option for these applications because it requires a large surface area and is usually thick and heavy.
Carbon steel structures that are left untreated will quickly corrode. Therefore, it is important to galvanize or paint carbon steel components to protect them against the elements. This is especially important for industrial environments that are highly corrosive.
No. 2 – Stainless Steel Fabrication
The stainless steel alloy is made of steel that contains a large amount of chromium, usually more than 10.5%. It is resistant to rust and staining, although certain environments, like those with low oxygen or high salt, can cause staining.
Stainless steel is easy to work with, just like carbon steel. It is easy to bend and is good for welding. It is more expensive than carbon steel — between 30-60% more. This is why it is reserved for applications that require corrosion resistance.
In industrial applications, stainless steel is used for tanks, bins, and hoppers in food processing. Stainless steel containers are used in both dry and wet food production facilities (e.g., beer, molasses, or grain).
No. 3 – Aluminum Fabrication
Aluminum, like stainless steel, resists corrosion. Generally, it is more resistant to this than any stainless steel except the most expensive. Aluminum is lightweight and has become a popular material in industries such as aerospace and automobiles that require metal but need to reduce weight.
Aluminum is also used for industrial and military equipment, such as caged ladders. Aluminum ladders require less maintenance, are lighter, and are easier to install than carbon steel ladders.
No. 4 – Copper Fabrication
Copper is the oldest metal on the list when it comes to human use. Copper has been used by humans for more than 10,000 years, mainly because it is easy to work with and is one of the rare native metals that can be found in nature. Steel, however, is created by removing the impurities in iron ore, and aluminum, although abundant, is usually found with other minerals.
